Roshan 11 month video

Roshan officially visited his second state. We spent ten awesome days in Maui for our family vacation. We ate tons of ahi, drank plenty of mai tais, saw lots of fishes, and tasted plenty of sand (at least Roshan did). Roshan also had a chance to show off his new surfer hairdo. He was quite popular with the ladies.

We also had his first real exposure to the ocean. The first day he basically cried every time a wave came in. It was the first time I have ever seen him scared of something. It took about an hour and then he was loving it. We couldn't get him out.

Some milestones:
  • Learned how to high five! All of those hours of training finally paid off (thanks Uncle Ed).
  • He is starting to talk. His favorite phrase right now is "uh oh". Very appropriate.
  • Roshan got a chance to pet his first animal at the Surfing Goat farms in Maui. He decided to use this as an opportunity to kick a goat in the head, slap their ears, and stick a finger in their nose. As you can imagine, he was not loved by the animals.
  • Favorite letter: Letter K. It also duals as his favorite toy.
  • First taste of Pop Rocks. He was very confused.
  • Favorite pastime: watching the washing machine. He can do it for almost ten whole minutes. That is an eternity in baby time.

Roshan's first tooth!

It took a while, but Roshan finally got his first tooth! He has already made good use of it by biting us whenever possible. It is a big relief (we were getting worried he would need dentures), but also eliminates our favorite excuse for his erratic behavior (he was teething). I will definitely miss his old man smile though...

Roshan 10 month video

Month 10 was a big one for Roshan, with some major events like Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Milestones:
  • Spitting. Lots of it. He got his first complaint from one of his day care colleagues ("Mama Joy, Roshan is spitting on me"). Fortunately, he made it a useful communication tool to tell us when he does not want any more food.
  • Walking on the furniture. He is all over the place. He even took his musical table and turned it into a baby walker. He has also basically given up improving his crawling technique.
  • Pulled the keys off his first computer. Roshan loves to grab and pull, which does not work well with keyboards. The first of many things he will eventually destroy.
  • First taste of over roasted turkey.
  • First trip to the aquarium. If you hear a kid yelling at the fishes and banging on the windows, that would be Roshan.
  • Kicked his first soccer ball. He definitely looks right footed.
  • Placed his first call. He found the re-dial key and called his Agee.
  • Favorite toy: balloons. He loved has no problem hitting them into his face.

Happy Halloween!

Roshan partied it up on his first Halloween. We first hit the Google party where he was able to show off his sweet pumpkin costume. He ripped it off with 30 minutes, but at least we got some pictures of him. We tried again at the Xcenda party...but he wasn't having it. Oh well, at least I scored some good candy. Thanks Roshan.

Roshan 9 month video

Milestones:
  • Roshan learned to pull himself up and stand on furniture. It took a few falls before he learned that it is far better to fall on your butt than your head. He now fears nothing!
  • First major blow up in public. Monica was in line at the post office when Roshan started to play with some keys from the person behind them. When Monica had to give the keys back, Roshan threw a massive fit as she left the post office and cried for a full city block. Mon had three separate people come to her and make comments about the crying baby. She finally gave in and gave him her keys...and instantly he was fine. It was the first of many times Roshan will be manipulating us.
  • First taste of wine. We went wine tasting in Sonoma for Sandy's birthday party. Roshan enjoyed some wine and cheese during the event. He loved it. Must be Rupa's influence.
  • Favorite food: yogurt. Mix in anything in there and he will eat it.
  • Favorite song: A-B-C-D. It somehow always calms him down.
  • Favorite toy: spoons and measuring cups. Good thing we bought all of these advanced toys for him.

Roshan Crawls!

Yes, it took a few bumps, bruises, and falls for success...but Roshan is now mobile. It took him about 35 seconds for him to jump to the wires behind the cable modem. Time for some baby proofing...

Here are some videos that capture his first crawl in real time. Please excuse the crazy parents.

Roshan 7-8 month

As you can probably tell, I got a little behind on the Roshan videos. It was a crazy few months for us, including Roshan buying us a new house and taking our first family vacation (Glacier National Forest). I will be posting on all of these events separately, but in the meantime...enjoy a new combined 7-8 month video.

Here are a few milestones:
  • Clapping. He loves it. The best is when he thinks he has done something interesting and starts to clap so others clap with him.
  • Traveled out of the state for the first time. Who would have thought it would be Montana?
  • First flight! It actually went better than expected. We flew to Montana threw Seattle, so they were pretty short flights. For three of the legs, he slept most of the way (motion is like a drug to him). Sadly, the fourth was a disaster. His ears popped, lots of screaming, and embarrassed parents praying the flight would end. I can't imagine the 24 hour flight to India.
  • Big enough to sit in a high chair. You don't realize the importance of this until it finally happens...parents can eat a normal meal without having to worry about a squirming kid in your arms. It was the first time Monica and I ate at the same time in months.
  • First bear sighting. Yes, Roshan saw his first bear in the wild. We were in Glacier National Park starting a hike when Monica heard some rumbling in the trees ahead. I figured it was a joke, since I had just told Monica to ignore all of the posted bear warnings. Then she saw a head and we took off with Roshan strapped to my back. A few hikers confirmed later that it was a baby grizzly.

Winkle Wedding

Roshan got his first chance to attend an American wedding. What better place to experience that than in Montana? Bryce and Emily were generous enough to allow Roshan to come along. He ended up having a fantastic time (and was the master of the dance floor).

I put the pictures in a new video service called Animoto. Let me know what you think...

We bought a house! (actually, a condo)

We are now the proud owners of the bottom floor from this remodeled Victorian mansion. The developers ripped everything out and made each floor a separate condo. 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1259 square feet, and cost waaaaaay too much money.

We are now in a new neighborhood called NOPA (north panhandle). I don't think that is an official name, but it makes it sound better than old Western Addition. We are sad to leave Noe, but excited to be in a new place close to lots of friends.

This was not an easy process. As many of you know, we have been looking for a new place for almost 8 months. We must have seen over a hundred places during the time (a lot of San Francisco inventory is crap). Then, after we finally find a place, the mortgage market collapses with the fall of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Fortunately, it all worked out.

We are incredibly excited...and now officially are rooting for a housing recovery. We hope to have all of you over soon!

Road trip

Roshan officially completed his first road trip. We drove down from San Francisco to Los Angeles so Roshan can finally meet all of the family friends in Pasadena and Irvine. Both families threw some great Roshan welcome parties. It was quite a turnout. Roshan met almost 300 people in a single three day period!

Roshan also just turned 6 months old. A few new milestones:
  • He can sit up now for over 20 minutes without any trouble. Although, it still ends with a "timmmmmmber."
  • Favorite foods: Peas and Green beans. Must be the Deshpande genes.
  • He's a screamer. Uh oh.
  • He found his toes. It is a matter of time until he shoves them in his mouth.
  • Roshan has discovered the ability to rip out flowers and leaves. Those are definitely Chandra genes.
  • Roshan got his first laptop and cell phone. It was only a matter of time.

Roshan turns 4 months old

Yes, we're back! Sorry for the long hiatus...the last few months have been quite busy (and my general laziness overwhelmed me). BUT, I am not back on top of it. You should seen a string of new and existing posts coming your way!

In the meantime, here is the latest video for Roshan's 4 month birthday.

Roshan turns 3 months old

Yep, I'm late again.

A few more milestones:
  • He started laughing on a consistent basis. But if people were always making strange faces at me, I would probably laugh too.
  • He made his first trip to Google. Sadly, he could not enjoy the free lunch. But then again, I guess all of his meals are free lunches.
  • He has now visited Sonoma over four times in the past two months. He loves the free booze.
  • He has gotten a lot stronger. He can pretty much hold his head up and kick his legs. It is only a matter of time before we get the soccer ball in front of him.
  • He recently started to sleep 6-7 hours a night! Of course, I've probably just jinxed us by even mentioning it.
  • He found the TV. I'm not sure there is any turning back now.
  • His favorite toy is now the mobile. There is something about four stuffed animals moving in a circular motion over his head...he thinks it is hilarious.

Roshan Meets the Aunties and Uncles

Oops. It has been over a month since the last post...mostly due to a crazy April. But now that we have a break, we have a new video!

Over the past three months, Roshan has seen an amazing set of Uncles and Aunties from all over the world, from Australia to India to England. It is clear he is going to be a completely spoiled...he already has enough clothes to last him through his first year! Thanks to all of you for your continued love and support. Here are a few highlights:

Most offensive gift
Bharat Uncle and Kavi Autie, with the racist octopus. For some reason, the people at Baby Einstein decided to make the voice describing rainbow colors to have "white" be much more cheerful than the word "brown." I guess it could have been worse...they didn't even include "black."

Most comfortable holding a baby
AB Uncle, who surprised us all with his past experience. Sorry Wendy Auntie, you were a close second.

Least comfortable holding a baby
Too many people to name

Most likely to teach Roshan bad words
Archana Auntie couldn't keep a lid on it. (Don't they cane you for that in Singapore?)

Most ambitious teacher
Ed Uncle, who spent a few hours trying to teach Roshan 2+2 while babysitting. Roshan ended up sleeping through most of the lesson.

Mostly likely to get pooped on.
Sandy Auntie, after Roshan decided to pull a "Triumph the Insult Dog" in her arms.

Most likely to steal our baby
Grandma Gail (Emily Auntie's Mom), who threatened to do so many many times. We have now installed cameras all over the crib, just in case. :)

Below you will find some pics. Apologies to those we didn't have pictures for...you will definitely make it in the next video installment! Trouble accessing the video? See the pictures here.

Roshan turns 2 months old

Sorry, I didn't have time to finish this video in time for Roshan's real birthday...but better late then never.

Some interesting milestones:
  • If it isn't obvious via the photos, he is a LOT bigger now. He has almost doubled his weight since birth.
  • He is almost able to hold his head up on his own.
  • He still does not sleep through the night. But last night, for the first time, he slept for 5 hours!! This warrants its own blog post.
  • He is starting to recognize people. For the first time he will cry when unknown people hold him. Finally, an advantage to being the parent.
  • He found his thumb to suck for the first time. Normally, this could be considered a bad thing. But given that it calms in down (especially at night), I'm all for it.
  • He continues to be the cutest baby in the world...as I am told from unbiased sources.

Enjoy the video!

Freedom...from house arrest

One of the most challenging things in having a new baby is being constrained on where you can go. For the first month, Monica and baby were basically stuck in the house 24x7, alternating between breastfeeding and sleeping. We rarely took him out except for a few doctor appointments.

Randomly, Roshan's first official outing was to Costco after the 3-week doctor's appointment. He had the luxury of traveling in his own shopping cart. We knocked him out with food ahead of time and he slept through the whole visit. We decided to get a little more aggressive and show Roshan a little bit of San Francisco.

Ever since, we have gone out every weekend to a new part of the city. We started with brunch in the Marina (safely exposing him to white upper class), but moved quickly to sunbathing in Baker Beach, playing poker in Pacific Heights, enjoying a picnic in Dolores Park, and drinking bloody mary's at the Ramp. At this point, Roshan is a seasoned SF veteran.

We'll continue to milk the limited time he is young and naive to not recognize all of these strange environments. So for a limited time, the Chandras have returned to a normal social calendar...we are open for business!

Anita visits San Francisco

Anita, after being out of the country for nearly eight months, finally returned home to San Francisco!

Roshan had a chance to hang out with his Maushi for the first time and the two really hit it off. Anita got to experience the full set of responsibilities, including deal with several "poop explosions" as she was changing diapers. She is now a certified baby sitter.

Ajay came up for the weekend to make it a full Deshpande party. Here are some pics from the full week.

Happy Birthdays

The Chandra family reached several big milestones on Monday.

Monica turned the big 3-0. We celebrated by stuffing ourselves with tons of great food over the weekend. We even had our first dinner without Roshan by leaving him with Rupa Bua. She passed the test with flying colors...

Roshan turned the big 2 months, already doubling his age. He celebrated with stuffing himself of milk, with a few long naps in between.

Personally, I am still coping with the knowledge I am married to a 30 year old woman and that my son is one month closer to become a teenager.

Baby Songs

As you would expect, one of the best ways to calm down a baby is to sing them a song. It is amazing to see how quickly Roshan will fall asleep after a few verses. My biggest problem was I didn't remember any of the nursery rhymes from childhood. My first few times I had to rely on a few verses from Pearl Jam, which is not exactly the most uplifting music.

Emily was kind enough to send me these lyrics of all major nursery rhymes. Have you ever looked at the lyrics? Some of them are just terrible. For example:
  • "Ring Around the Rosies" is actually about the Bubonic plague ("Ashes to ashes" is about cremation of dead bodies!)

  • The cradle comes crashing down in "Rock-a-bye Baby";

  • "Three Blind Mice" is about Queen Mary who persecuted Protestants and burned three of them at the stake!

  • "London Bridge" is about the (multiple) destructions of the bridge

All of these make Pearl Jam look pale in comparison. So I have officially given up and decided to sing only Christmas songs. At least they are all positive and cheerful (and more importantly, memorable).

Look for Roshan to dominate the caroling season.

Good nights, bad nights

You always hear from current parents that no matter what you do, just expect some good nights and bad nights. And on the bad nights, just push through it and move on. Well, we had a particularly bad night that I just had to share with everyone.

3:00 to 7:00PM - Family nap. Big mistake.

10:30 to 11:00PM - Mon starts last feeding before going to bed. Diaper change. Mon puts him down to bed.

11:00PM to 12:30AM - He sleeps. Woohoo! Mon can't fall asleep so she reads her book.

12:30AM to 1:30AM - Roshan cries, Mon feeds him, Mon puts him down to bed. 15 minutes later, start it all over again. Repeat 4 times total. Throw in a diaper change at some point in there.

1:30AM to 3:00AM - Roshan sleeps. Mon is now totally awake. Can't fall asleep. Surfs the web.

3:00AM to 3:15AM - Mon finally gets tired, just about to go to bed...

3:15AM to 5:00AM - Roshan awakes. Diaper change. Feed for 40 minutes. Roshan falls asleep for...approx 3 min. He is now fully awake and in full play mode. Mon tries everything to put him back to sleep: swaddling, singing a song, sleeping in our bed. Nothing. Yes, this continues for a full hour.

5:00AM to 5:30AM - Duties transition to Rishi. First duty is to change dooty diaper (a ten on the twelve point scale). As I am about to put on the new diaper, Roshan decides to pee all over himself. Sigh. We do a full change. Roshan still fully awake. I bring in the swing to our room to calm him down.

6:00AM to 6:30AM - Success! He falls asleep in a matter of minutes. Woohoo!

6:30AM to 8:30AM - Failure! He wakes up again. But at least he is sleepy, so I bring him into bed. He finally falls asleep...but ten minutes later he wakes himself up from the congestion (he is recovering from a cold). I pat him until he calms down. Repeat every 10 minutes for the full two hours.

Family wakes up...with everyone a little cranky. Welcome to parenthood.

So don't let the peaceful sleeping pictures fool you...

Lessons from one month old parents

Today Roshan officially turned one month old! He celebrated with two "cups" of milk. I figured that now we are veterans of parenthood, we would pass along some lessons learned to all of you young kids out there.

  • Ever heard the phrase "sleeping as soundly as a baby"? Well, it is all a lie unless "soundly" refers to tons of grunts, gurgles, and wimpers throughout the night. It took us a few nights to not panic on every noise during the night. Be warned.

  • Parents who say their babies sleep through the night are liars. That is what I plan to believe.

  • The poop schedule, or lack thereof. We diligently tracked all of his dirty diapers for the first few weeks to learn...he goes through a lot of dirty diapers (10 a day!). We even started measuring his "poops" on a 1-10 scale, until we started hitting a few elevens and twelves and had to reset our scale.

  • Pampers are better than Huggies. There is nothing worse than a leaky diaper at 3AM. Once we hit the level 1 diapers we will let you know how well the Kirkland Signatures work.

  • Most people say babies feed every two to three hours. What they don't mention is that time is measured from the start of one feeding to the start of another. Once you factor in the 30-45 minutes to feed, you soon realize every nap is an opportunity for one task and one task only. So you either eat, watch TV, shower, check email, nap...but don't expect to do more than one.

  • Sadly, rumors of baby boys peeing on you during a diaper change are true (with surprising distance!). Roshan even got our doctor.

  • Another secret that only recent parents know or talk about...breastfeeding. One would think that nature had found a way for this to be simple and easy once that baby has arrived. Wrong. There is tons of work that needs to be put in (for baby and mother) before everything "works".

  • Sleep deprivation has some interesting consequences. Short-term memory is history. One time I soaped myself three times in the shower before I realized what I was doing...luckily I ran out of body wash or I could have been in there for hours.

But at the end, pictures like these make it all worth it...

Truly the little one

It's hard to get a sense of Roshan's size until you actually see him in person. He really is small. He didn't even fit any of his 0-3 month clothes, so we had to alternate between borrowed preemie clothes and baggy MC Hammer style pants.

The only time we got a chance to understand his size was when we got a good look at the other babies in the birth center. They weighed seven or eight pounds but looked almost twice his size. Still, to us he looks right and all other babies are enormous freaks.

Fortunately, he is mostly caught up with the his peers...but even today, people are surprised. I guess it is hard to see from the previous pictures, so I pulled together a few pics that try to show his relative size. Enjoy!

Clearing up some confusion

After an eventful couple of weeks, we are glad to report we are finally in a position to start responding back to all of your best wishes.

The more we chat with the nurses, doctors and even our friends, we are realizing there is some confusion on how to pronounce Roshan's name (I guess we failed my substitute teacher test). Some of the more interesting pronunciations: "Russian", "Ro-shawn", or "Ra-shawn."

So to clear up any remaining confusion, Roshan is pronounced "roh-shuhn". If it helps, his name rhymes with motion (although I am sure his school mates will come up with something much more creative).

So please don't confuse our baby...we don't want to pay for the Botox!

Family Promotions

With the arrival of the first grandchild in the family, the Chandra and Deshpande families are obviously in a jubilant and joyous mood. Fortunately, the grandparents also had a chance to immediately visit and see their grandson for the first time.

I have never, ever, seen such a big smile from the two grandfathers as they held little Roshan. It really brought things in perspective.

And the good news keeps getting better. As a result of Roshan's birth, everyone "upgrades" into a new title within the family. Some of these are obvious (Mom and Dad), but others are distinct based on the relationship to the parents.

So congratulations to the following promotions!

My parents...become Dadaji and Dadiji
Monica's parents...become Ajobah and Agee
Rupa...becomes Rupa Bua.
Anita...becomes Anita Maushi.
Ajay...becomes Ajay Mama.

And lest not forget all of you, who are now either Aunties or Uncles. Let's hope you all prove worthy of the title (so clean it up!). In the meantime, enjoy this video of Roshan meeting the family...

The hospital stay

One of the most surprising things about the labor and delivery was the quality of the hospital staff and facilities. I generally hate hospitals, most likely from my experience as an intern moving urine bags from one place to another. But this place was different.

We delivered in Mills Peninsula in Burlingame. The cool thing now is that the Mom stays in a room called LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum). As the name implies, everything happens here. No need to move around, the baby stays with you the whole time, and they even have a cot for the Dad to crash. It was better than a Best Western.

I also realized just how limited an impact the doctors really make on your hospital experience. (Sorry future MDs, but is the plain truth). In our entire stay, we probably saw the doctors for about one hour in total, including delivery. Everything about your stay is all about the nurses...and we were very fortunate to have some great ones.

Of course, the downside is that every nurse has a different (read: conflicting) opinions about ALL aspects of baby care; breastfeeding, swaddling, pacifiers, clothing...Our head was spinning, especially after seeing four to six nurses day.

Needless to say, while we appreciated everyone's help, we are glad to be home and start making our own mistakes...

Some points of comparison

Since several people have mention it is difficult to decide which parent Roshan looks like without a fair point of comparison, here are a couple of pictures to help you out. The first is me as a baby, the second is Monica.

Faces of Roshan

One of the favorite games for people (especially family), is to discuss which parent a newborn child resembles. Personally, I don't think a newborn looks like anybody until they are past one year of age, but I don't want to get in the way of tradition...

In the spirit of election season, let's have the people decide. Take a look at the video slide show below and state your preference. Although the market failed in guessing the baby's sex, let's try one more time.

Update: Since thus far all votes were for the "Nobody" option, I removed it. Just didn't seem to follow the spirit of the game. So this time you need to make a choice!

Finally, nice work to those who continued to vote for boy after the baby was born. I'm all about skewing results to prove the market was right!

Baby Chandra has arrived!

On January 24th at 9:08AM, the Chandra family was blessed with a new son, Roshan (meaning "shining light"). It is still hard to get over our immediate joy and shock. Reality has finally hit.

A few specs for those in the crowd keeping score.
Weight: 5 pounds, 8 ounces
Length: 18 inches
Cuteness: off the charts. See video below for confirmation.

Thankfully for mom, the labor was relatively short for a first time pregnancy. All said and done, it took less than 7 hours from water break to delivery versus the average of 18 hours! And forget diamonds being a woman's best friend...it's all about the epidural.

Thanks to everyone for their care and support. We promise to catch up with you all once we are ready!

Baby Prep

Before the pregnancy, I had assumed that baby prep was pretty easy...buy a crib, a car seat, some baby clothes and a good cigar. Then I walked into a Babies R Us.

Imagine a store the size of Walmart dedicated to a person the size of a loaf of bread. It makes you wonder how we survived the wild without our baby swings, tub thermometers, or diaper stacker. On top of that, you have the pleasure of choosing from 30 different strollers, 15 different car seats, and even 10 different mattresses (spring or foam?).

Fortunately, we were recommended a magical book called Baby Bargains. It looks at every product category, reviews all of the brands, and makes top recommendations. Seriously, this book saved me hours from comparing features like pump flow (breast pumps) or a 3 vs 5-point harness (car seat). And thanks to Chi-Hua and Sohi's friend, you can now get a full summary of the book by clicking here. Do you really need all this stuff? No. But does everyone buy it? Yes.

It also doesn't help that you need to find a place to store all of this stuff. We had to do several weekends of housecleaning and furniture assembly, with much needed help from Monica's family. That doesn't include the three hour tours of Babies R Us to check out strollers. This helps to explain why we haven't seen many of you in a while.

The good news is we are now all set. Now we just need the baby...

Mon at 35 weeks

Still very pregnant but with a nice pregnancy glow!

Freedom for a night

One of the things you realize as you get closer and closer to the date is how you will be missing the little things once the baby is born. Going to the movies, watching the game at a bar, player poker to 5am, enjoying a fancy dinner, sleeping...you know, being fully independent. (Golf intentionally excluded. I'm convinced the car seat can fit on a golf cart and must be good for the baby).

My hope was that even after we got pregnant we could have one last hurrah and max out on all of the things we haven't had a chance to do yet. Little do I know how exhausted we would be from the pregnancy itself. So it was a nice relief when we finally got to get away from all the baby planning and enjoy a Cirque de Soleil show. And yes, I realize we haven't even had the baby yet.
